Adaptability is one of life's crucial survival skills. This interactive
program will not tell you what to change, but it will certainly
provide a number of options on both how to implement and cope with
changes. This session begins with a review of strategies for those
with some degree of power. Part two emphasizes communication, emotional
intelligence, and rational thinking skills that are helpful when
you don't control the process. Then, working from the perspective
that "change is learning," the program concludes by showing
how principles of learning can be effectively applied to managing
change.

Reference Interview: Old Tricks...New Challenges

Think the day of the traditional
Reference Interview is history? Think again!! Mastering the
skills and techniques used by reference librarians in all types of
library settings is just as important today - maybe even more so with
the vast amounts of information and new formats. With the advent of
the Internet and World Wide Web, it is a real challenge to determine
the needs of your users quickly and accurately and then direct them to
useful, pertinent resources.
This interactive workshop is
highly recommended for all library staff who provide reference
services, whether to the public, students and faculty, business
professionals, corporate executives, or other special populations. We
will cover the basics of an effective Reference Interview, discuss the
types of reference questions, and review some excellent Web resources
for answering "ready reference" questions. The course
includes a series of exercises and role-playing, with ample
opportunity for group discussion.

Safety,
Security, and Preparedness for Libraries (6 hours)
Due to their unique characteristics, libraries are wide open to
certain predictable and unpredictable risks. This workshop, designed
for library personnel, security officers, and facilities staff, will
cover planning and implementation of safety practices, security considerations,
and emergency preparedness procedures for all types of libraries.
Protection of staff, patrons, facilities, data, equipment, and materials
will be addressed. Also covered will be special topics related to
hurricanes, tornadoes, intellectual freedom, USA PATRIOT Act, pandemics,

that take participants from the risk assessment phase through the
development of policies and procedures and on to the maintenance
